Or maybe I should buy a new router myself (but then Plusnet will no doubt say that they don't support it so any problems are mine). But how does one find out whether they provide totally inadequate routers like Plusnet and (presumably BT).

I'm tempted to switch back to the old router (which may or may not have problems of stability) or alternatively try another Broadband provider which actually supplies routers which properly support Windows home networking. I find both of these positions extraordinary - surely lots of users have home networks now, as the average family is supposed to have over 6 devices connected to the Internet, and as for specially commissioning a router which doesn't do all that the old one did, well words fail me. They claim that the old Technicolor Router supports these functions as it was a generic commercial router (even though the TG582n sticker says it's Plusnet branded), whereas the new router was "specified by BT/Plusnet" and therefore has limited functionality. Plusnet say that their remit only extends to the broadband connection and that problems with home networking are nothing to do with them.

The android phones when booted up have also asked for the new wifi password even though they should have remembered it I have never seen them forget a password before. Other hassles: the laptops don't always connect to wifi automatically on boot-up even though they see the new router and the "connect automatically" box is ticked and they have remembered the password. After even more playing around I got a little functionality restored but not all of it. After several hours work I got all 3 printers visible again from other machines, but could not get files on any machine visible to any of the others (we have been using a Windows Workgroup as Windows Homegroups do not work on WinXP). With the change of router most LAN functions stopped working.

In the house we have two Win10 laptops (wifi) and also an old WinXP desktop used mainly as file and print server (connected by Ethernet cable), plus two Android phones (wifi). But the new modem has brought with it lots of local networking issues, which I didn't expect. The connection does seem to be more stable, with an outage at most every couple of days and maybe faster speeds, but as with all intermittent faults it's hard to be sure. Instead they suggested that our existing router, a Technicolor TG582n, was "out-of-date" and that a more modern router might help, so they sent me a new BT/Plusnet-branded SagemCom 2704 to replace it. Calling out OpenReach to check the line might find that there was a physical cause, but if it was in our own house wiring then they would charge us for the call-out, so I haven't got that desperate yet.
They said there was a rather high noise level on the line. As I posted in an earlier post, out ADSL connection had been experiencing outages every few hours and sometimes very low speeds, so I've been in touch with Plusnet for nearly a month now trying to find the cause.
